Preppy J. Crew Takes Another 30% Off… if their site is up.

Hello-Hello and happy back-to-reality-day!

Blah.

Double blah-blah. There.  We said it. (This is just so unPrincesslike… could it be the evil twin is out and about today? Oh my!)

We apologize. This is clearly the result of some overindulgence on our part.  A bit too much gnoshing and not enough walking/running. But it is today’s harsh, cold reality here in the corner condo at the Preppy Princess InterGactic HQ.  Harrumph. Well, enough about us. How about you? Is anyone else experiencing a bit of a slump today?

One of our favorite retailers is most definitely experiencing more than a slump; it looks like an all-out crash at the J. Crew website. Here is what TP saw when checking the site throughout the day, and currently as of 5:30pm EST:

J. Crew 12/1/08

J. Crew 12/1/08

This has been the case since this morning, with the exception of one occasion when we saw the welcome screen. But that screen did carry an enticing offer:

  • CELEBRATE AN ADDITIONAL 30% OFF MARKDOWNS.
  • USE PROMO CODE EXTRA30 AT CHECKOUT

The offer is good through December 3rd, applicable only to Sale merchandise. We offer a humble “Thank You” to the fabulous Miss LBR, one of the first to let us know about her unsuccessful efforts to place an order on the site.

This represents something of an apocalyptic event for the retailer.  We were surprised when the additional 30% off promotion popped up in the lower left corner of the screen. While it is likely a planned promotion as the company continues cutting inventory, we did have a momentary thought it could be in response to the online debacle.

We clicked multiple times on the Additional 30% Off link, all to no avail. And then suddenly, we made it to this page:

J. Crew 12.1.08

J. Crew 12.1.08

And that page allowed us to then stumble upon this utterly divine jacket. We thought, oh-my-goodness, how-darling, how-very-Princess, we-simply-must-have-it! Now! We’ll take a chance this will work! We will order the Herringbone école jacket in Mediterranean blue.

J. Crew Herringbone école jacket

J. Crew Herringbone école jacket

We did not order the jacket. The. Site. Stopped. Working.

Again.

It is unlikely consumers or Wall St. pooh-bahs will respond kindly to the latest technical struggles. Keep in mind that J. Crew has already spent more than $1,000,000 on customers who experienced difficulties with their site, including many friends of the Princess (henceforth known as FOPs).  J. Crew CFO James Scully told stock analysts last week about some of those expenses:

“… approximately $1 million in customer accommodations related to the direct system initiatives in the form of free and upgraded shipping and other customer appeasements…”

We don’t know about you, but we would prefer being referred to as “accommodated” rather than being “appeased.” The latter makes us sound like some sort of whiny, perpetually unhappy individual who had to be placated.  What do you think?

Now we are wondering if this is one of the next things we’ll see…

J. Crew July, 2008

J. Crew July, 2008

However, we speculate the Call Center is working at 800-562-0258. Call us crazy, but we can’t imagine the preppy retailer hasn’t fixed this part of the operation.

While frustrated we are superstitious enough to not say anything hyper-negative about J. Crew’s ongoing difficulties. Why? Because we are so incredibly paranoid have a little karma concern and do not want to arouse the wrath of the cybergods. Negatory. Nope. Not us.

You know how much the Princess loves her preppy dishes: Boatman Geller’s plates…along with the the platters and trays and the preppy plates from Preppy Plates…

TP is sends a big “congratulations” to Preppy Plate CEO Molly Hamilton, for this stellar story in Sunday’s Washington Post; it included a cute shot of Molly and her children.

Black Friday Ads: Target, Polo Ralph Lauren & Hilfiger & J. Crew, Banana Republic Outlet Stores

Greetings of the day and all appropriate niceties, we thought it best if we just shared this information with you right away.  We have more information on a number of Black Friday sales, starting with Target’s ad, available here.

To view the complete insert that will be in local newspapers the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, click here.

Also, expect lower prices at your local Boutique Tarzshay for the foreseeable future, especially in the clothing and home store areas.  The effort to jumpstart Target’s slow sales includes going head-to-head with Walmart on some merchandise, along with using the online component to boost sales. From a recent Associated Press story:

“The company will also offer half a dozen “value items” online every day at special prices.”

“We have taken a very aggressive point of view this year in terms of our promotional pricing, so we expect to be price leaders on selected items … “

The information for the Polo Ralph Lauren Factory Stores event is also now available; they are calling the promotion ‘Midnight Madness.’

Courtesy Polo Ralph Lauren

Courtesy Polo Ralph Lauren

We will continue to monitor them for information on what to expect at the regular Ralph Lauren stores as well as what additional savings are planned at factory stores other than this initial 20% discount off purchases of $150+.

Tommy Hilfiger is offering substantial savings for Black Friday:

There are also a number of coupons for specific savings, like the one shown below, “Save an Additional 25% on any $200 Purchase,” but we have no idea if one must have an “official coupon,” or if it could be printed off any site, like ours.

The J. Crew Factory Outlet stores are also doing Black Friday:

If it is difficult to read the small print up above, early risers who shop before 10am can take an additional 50% off clearance styles, nothing to sneeze at.

Bath and Body Works is doing a VIP Bag with purchases over $100, their scan can be seen here.

They are also doing Buy 1, Get 1 at 50% off now…

…along with several “Secret Online Sales.

Other savings at specific factory outlets and stores:

  • Banana Republic Factory Stores Midnight Madness 40% off the entire store! Expires: 11/28/08
  • Eddie Bauer Factory Stores Midnight Madness Save an extra 30% off your entire purchase. Ad Code: 5700. Expires: 11/28/08

Vera Bradley will be offering free shipping on Dec.1,

We are a little surprised at Nautica’s listings, essentially $20 off a purchase of $100 or more, not nearly as aggressive as we anticipated considering their ongoing struggles in the marketplace.

For online shoppers, right now the company is offering free ground shipping on orders totaling more than $100.

On the electronics front, Best Buy has a number of discounts and markdowns that can be seen here.  The retailer will open at 5am the Friday morning after Thanksgiving.

Circuit City will also open at 5am; their ad scans are available here.

We do not yet have specifics on the Ann Taylor Loft stores, but can tell you they are now taking an Additional 40% off already reduced prices, a good deal in and of itself…

as well as offering a $25 gift card for every $50 you spend.

Keep an eye on the Tanger Outlet store site as well as the Prime Outlets site; both are decent resources for updates on special discounts and hours for the stores, although Tanger provides much more information than the Prime Outlets site offers.

When we have more on other retailers generally thought to offer a ‘preppy aesthetic’ or preppy styles, we’ll get that information to you, including the non-factory store sales and markdowns.

More Election Fashions Including Michelle Obama’s $10,000 Earrings, Sneak Peek at Thakoon for Target, Preppy Updates

It is Friday, and what a magnificent thing that is… sigh. “And visions of bubble-baths danced in her head…”

We start with more photos from Election Night in response to the ongoing inquiries we are receiving related to Cindy McCain’s dress (a suit), as well as Michelle Obama and Sarah Palin’s apparel.

Jim Bourg/Reuters

PHOTO: Jim Bourg/Reuters

There isn’t really loads more to report.  However, we can share new information regarding the future First Lady’s earrings on Tuesday night, hopefully seen in the photographs that follow.  (We do apologize in advance for their large size; clearly we are trying to show those beautiful earrings!)

Morry Gash/AP

PHOTO: Morry Gash/AP

They are by Loree Rodkin, crafted of white gold and diamonds. UPI spoke with Ms. Rodkin about Ms. Obama wearing her design election night:

“Loree Rodkin, a Los Angeles-based designer of expensive jewelry, said she was surprised and pleased to see Obama wearing her earrings. Rodkin said the design retails for $10,275 a pair — and were not a loan.”

Emmanuel Dunand/AFP/Getty

PHOTO: Emmanuel Dunand/AFP/Getty

The earrings look light and lacy, and very feminine, stunning on Ms. Obama.  In the online bio at her website the designer is described:

“…known for her noncomformist visionary approach to jewelry making…. has designed jewelry for most of Hollywood’s brightest stars including Madonna, Mary J. Blige, Cher, Aerosmith…”

According to the Browns Fashion website, the earrings are available for ordering now, if one is so inclined:

If interested in purchasing the earrings, one must email Browns, they are not currently available on the site.

Here is a photo someone named Diablo Cody (?) in what is a similar style if the skull and crossbones are removed:

A Loree Rodkin ad from May, 2008:

For a good look at the designer’s work, try these items at Glimpse, or the selection at Blue Bee.  It would seem from surveying a variety of retailers and other sites that a fair amount of Ms. Rodkin’s work is done using images of skulls, daggers, and other “goth” (?) motifs. (Is that the term…?) Here is the designer in a press photo:

Our journalism background requires us to point out that Cindy McCain received substantial criticism for wearing diamond earrings at the Republican Convention valued at $280,000. A popular magazine estimated them to be 3 carats in size; the report was not confirmed or denied.

Today the Obamas attended a parent-teacher conference in Chicago:

Otherwise, the onslaught of newsprint and airwaves devoted to the Narciso Rodriguez dress worn by Ms. Obama election night continues to grow.

Back to the continuing questions here at the Prepatorium regarding Cindy McCain and Sarah Palin and their election night dresses.  Actually, neither wore a dress; they both were attired in what TP would call a “cocktail suit.” (Oh dear, that may reveal a bit too much information regarding our age, shall we say. There you have it.) And here we have the photo:

Brian Snyder/Reuters

Ms. Palin’s dark navy suit is by Tahari, and we have lots more information on it as well as several more photos, here at Wednesday’s “extended election night fashions” post.  That post reveals the only store where the navy color is available.

A reminder on the Michelle Obama book, the biography by WaPo reporter Lisa Mundy; reports indicate it is selling fast; why this would surprise anyone is beyond us.

Readers may remember hearing about Target’s upcoming collection by Thakoon Panichgul, a designer Michelle Obama has worn several times. We have early photos showing some of the designs thanks to the always on top of things people at Nylon magazine.

As detailed in a previous post, this is one of a handful of designers favored by Michelle Obama. The collection is due to debut at the retailer on Christmas Day.

The pieces look very beachy, ideal for one’s resort wardrobe over the winter holidays. And that is perfect as the collection debuts in the middle of winter, on Christmas Day. That seems rather odd, doesn’t it?

The coat won’t work on an elderly prep like TP (sniff), but it will look darling on most anyone else.

Prices for the pieces will range from $20 to $70.  Also to debut On Christmas Day, the Erickson-Beamon for Target Collection, another line Ms. Obama is seen wearing. Here is a preview picture of what to expect, courtesy of the oh-so-hip Nitrolicious.

Erickson-Beamon has already collaborated with a retailer, Urban Outfitters.  That line is available in the UK at the Kensington High Street and Oxford Street stores, as well as at the UK online site. Below, their Crystal Cube Necklace from that line:

If the subject of designer collaborations with Target sounds slightly familiar, perhaps it is because just this Tuesday we talked about the surprise announcement of Target’s upcoming line with edgy designer Alexander McQueen.  We now have a date for that collection to be available: March 1st, 2009. If seeking more information and photos showing multiple pieces from each designer, this post is fairly comprehensive, albeit in a bloggage sort of way.

We close with few quick hits on preppy goings-on …

  • Talbots has confirmed they are selling J. Jill
  • the oh-so-stylish Third Coast Preppy found this fun article about the Lilly Pulitzer exhibit that opened at the New School for Design at Parsons
  • Online shopping is now available at Lilly Pulitzer! FULL DISCLOSURE: An awesome preppy blogger discovered this outstanding information, and we cannot remember who it was, but they deserve the credit, not us. (If you know, please let us know so they might be properly thanked
  • The über-preppy television show known as Gossip Girl has another star landing a big endorsement opportunity: Ed Westwick (who plays Chuck Bass) is the new face for K-Swiss. Below, the actor shooting in New York Thursday:

And a reminder to enter our Great Preppy Giveaway Contest by leaving a comment telling us one thing you are thankful for related to America …one thing about the United States for which you are thankful. Remember, if you mention this contest on your blog, you are then eligible to send the snappy Madras photocards to a friend! And the best part of this?  It is all free! Here is a quick glance at the Primary Prize, the Scout Tote:

This Just In….the Next Target Collaboration & And Inaugural Party Frocks?

Well, for heaven’s sake – if news isn’t breaking out all over the place this election evening!

We quickly interrupt your election updates to share a few preppy news alerts, starting with the a look at what Michelle Obama plans to wear this evening.  With the Obama campaign clearly hoping tonight’s event in Chicago’s Grant Park is celebrating a victory, in this piece from the Journal’s ‘Heard on the Runway‘ blog we learn about a possible wardrobe selection for Ms. Obama.

The blog showcases a conversation with Maria Pinto, one of Michelle Obama’s favorite designers:

“For Tuesday, Ms. Pinto has a dress in mind that she hopes Ms. Obama will wear. The dress, a coral-red silk crepe sheath with three-quarter sleeves, an empire waist and a high neckline with a burst of sunray pleats emanating from the collar, is a piece that Ms. Obama bought a few months ago but hasn’t worn to an event yet.”

And as far as a dress (more appropriately, a gown) for a certain date in January, should Ms. Obama need a party frock? The designer told reporter Cheryl Lu-Lien Tan “…she’s already begun sketching an Inaugural Day look in her head.”

“Something bright in color, with some movement,” says Ms. Pinto, declining to share more beyond that. “I just did costumes for the Joffrey (Ballet) so I have dance on the brain.”

While Ms. Obama has made no mention of an inaugural dress, über-star Oprah Winfrey has, calling in to a radio show this morning and sharing the following:

“So help me God, I am looking at it right now…. Actually I started in February. I was speaking with Michelle [Obama] and Caroline Kennedy and Maria Shriver — we were all doing a big rally out in California. At the end of the rally Michelle Obama said something powerful, ‘and I want you to leave here and envision Barack Obama taking the oath of office’…. I created a vision board. I had never had a vision board before. I came home, I got me a board and put Barack Obama’s picture on it and I put a picture of my dress I want to wear to the inauguration.”

In a different story the paper profiles the designer; we show these pieces as photographed by Jens Mortensen for The Wall Street Journal.

We’ll take all three please.

Also tonight, word on everyone’s favorite mass-market retailer, Target. The company is expected to  announce its collaboration with high-end designer Alexander McQueen in a move fashion insiders consider to be the most notable of all Target’s collaborative efforts.

Talaya Centeno

Above, a suit from the McQ by Alexander McQueen line. The Target collection will be closer to this in look and feel than to the regular Alexander McQueen line.  The designer’s McQ group is not entirely unknown to Princess readers; here is an August post featuring ‘Nouveau Prep’ looks, including this McQ fringed skirt at Bluefly in blue, red and black. (Pssst…it is now on sale!)

.

Next we show the McQ Dotty wool jacket at Net-a-porter.

The fabric for this piece is a lush and lovely wool with a soft hand and beautiful drape.

34423_fr_l34423_cu_l

The McQueen collection will be part of a larger initiative from Target, an effort the retailer is calling ‘Designer Collaborations.’

While the often edgy and frequently racy designer isn’t TP’s style, we do think this one will be just oodles of fun!

Target’s Next Designer Lines? It’s All About Accessories & Fab Cosmetics

EDITOR’S NOTE: The title of our post changed to accommodate the following comment:

Hello, I am wrting you concerning the name cool cosmetics/ You must remove this from your we-site and product I own the name by trademark.

If you do not remove you will leave me no choice but to turn this over to our corporate attorney’s.

Regina Swope

615-202-7347

We made the egregious error of using the words c-ol cosmetics in our title. Sigh.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++

The Princess is a trifle scattered this bright and sunny Saturday. It’s possible we may have flung ourselves a little too enthusiastically into our favorite new sport, extreme gardening. We discovered this earlier in the week, and let us just say, why head to the Club when one can achieve the same (perhaps better) results right here at the Prepatorium.

hydrangeas

There is simply so much preppy and style news The Princess is tracking, we’re all atwitter! Would you be so good as to allow us to just ‘cut to the chase,’ as I believe the operative phrase states, and we’ll dispense with our more civilized “Hello,” and “How are you’s” if that is all right with you.

Target Logo

As part of their very successful and generally very cool Design for All program Target is adding three permanent cosmetic lines and they have also announced their next two temporary fashion collections!

The Boutique is planning their next special collections for the not too distant future, and accessory lovers will be celebrating, as it is going to be all about shoes and handbags! Sigerson Morrison will create Target’s 3rd limited edition shoe collection. We showcase a luscious yellow flat from the fab designing duo of Kari Sigerson and Miranda Morrison, and these just happen to be on sale at the pair’s own site.

Sigerson Morrison Flat

The next limited edition handbag designer will be from dynamic British designer Anya Hindmarch; below we show a Hindmarch embellished satin clutch from the Vivre site. Both lines launch October 12th.

As usual, the collections will be available at select Target stores nationwide and at Target.com, in this case through December 26. The dates have The Princess wondering if, at least on the handbag side of things, there is an expectation of holiday gift buying with this particular group, as they are selling essentially for the month of November through the day after Christmas? An expiring mind would so love to know.

www.vivre.com/control/product/~category_id=9001/~product_id=39755

While it is no surprise Target is making the big moves on the cosmetics front, we didn’t know they were signing up such big names, especially Jemma Kidd.

Jemma Kidd Image

Aussie Napoleon Perdis is also a big get for Target, although the Princess must admit this isn’t a name with which we were familiar. Perhaps one of our favorite bloggers of a prepitatious persuasion, Nautical by Nature, who is wrapping up her Australian Excellent Adventure, can enlighten us on Mr. Perdis (seen below).

Napoleon Perdis at Work

The third new cosmetics name for Target comes from Petra Strand, one of the founders of niche British cosmetics brand, Pixi.

Pixi Cosmetics Home Page

It sounds as though the retailer is going to be very smart about this, spending up to $15 million just on the first six weeks of the new products’ launch. Target is going to continue its relationship with Sonia Kashuk, the company’s first entrant into their Design for All line in cosmetics.

Arguably the biggest thing Target is doing in the cosmetics department is this: they will have testers for these new lines that will play a big role in getting customers introduced to the new products! (If you’re one of our gentlemen readers or unfamiliar with the earth-shaking nature of this announcement, let it simply be said that for years Target has been strongly criticized by customers and industry insiders for their refusal to use testers, a backbone of department store cosmetic departments.)

A Line Has Been Crossed: The New Tiffany Eyeglasses

There is much that can go wrong in this world and somehow, one finds a way to cope. There are everyday tragedies you learn to live with, like your neighbor on the Cape renting their cottage to absolutely hideous people. Or Ralph Lauren making their logo bigger than ever. (For those who are not regular readers, The Princess has been diagnosed as a Logophobic.) Or the caterer running out of the petit-fours you ordered for the League luncheon. Rain the day of your best friend Bitsy’s wedding at her home on the island. (Yes, the one she got in the divorce.) When these little tragedies occur, one simply soldiers on, no complaining, no whining, no PDGs. (Public Displays of Grief.)

But then you see this.

Tiffany 1837 Collection Tiffany\'s Eyewear

And this.

Tiffany Tortoise Glasses

The recently released Tiffany eyeglasses and sunglasses with a logo the size of Mt. Rushmore. Trust us, it is that enormous. Hopefully the next photos give you some sense of the scale.

Tiffany Sunglasses Tortoise logo

Return to Tiffany Sunglasses

It’s not the fact that Tiffany is making glasses, or to be more accurate, allowing someone else to make the glasses and put their name on them. It’s called licensing and everyone does it. In this case it’s Luxottica that Tiffany made the arrangement with; the partnership was announced with great fanfare last fall and The Princess has been almost sleepless since, living in fear of how the final product would appear. As regular readers will know, a licensing deal is not what’s causing TP’s blood pressure to go off the charts. No, you know better and are quickly emailing each other with the Red Alert Signal, internally shrieking “Dive, Dive, Dive.” You know the staff has already fled the premises in terror, including Cook, always the most loyal of employees. They even removed the pets.

Tiffany Glasses ad

Well, you can all remain calm. We’re upgrading from the Prozac Latte to a double Lithium Light. On the rocks. Are we hurting? Of course. You see, if there was one company we thought would not fall prey to the logoization of everything, it was this one. We really should have known better. Truly we should have, because all the warning signs were there. The growing number of products in the catalog in the Return to Tiffany and 1837 Collections should have tipped us off. (Below we show a Return to Tiffany charm bracelet and an 1837 Collection cufflink.) Do we feel a sense of betrayal? Of course.

Return to Tiffany Charm & Bracelet Tiffany 1837 Square Cufflinks

The majority of the glasses don’t appear to be completely wretched. It is the group styled after the Return to Tiffany collection with their massive sterling silver plates glued on the sides that are the worst offenders. LC (Lewis Comfort Tiffany, son of Tiffany founder Charles Lewis Tiffany) would absolutely stroke out if he saw these. Call TP crazy, but we sincerely doubt the Tiffany logo was, or is prominently displayed anywhere on the Vince Lombardi Trophy, commissioned by the NFL, and we doubt it is highly visible on the NASCAR trophy Tiffany’s was asked to create. But here we are with it on the glasses.

But you know what? TP will power down that Lithium Light and move on. Perhaps we’ll turn our attention to the must-see Whim Collection by Cynthia Rowley for Target. Now if you do find yourself intrigued by the eyewear, some of which is curious and some of which might be quite elegant, prices range from $330 to $1,150 and you’ll see everything from rimless to aviator styles. Happy Hunting.

Ultimate Preppy Names & Who Do The Rich Love the Most?

Well, it is a Monday, isn’t it? Yes indeedy, we are off and running.

You have probably heard some ‘preppy’ names over the years. How ado these rank on your Prep-O-Meter? Peaking in the Red Zone?

  • Tucker Merrigan
  • Grayson Connors
  • Ashton Hotchkiss
  • Slade Patterson

We hope so, as they are courtesy of the folks at one of the Inside Lacrosse blogs, and just a few of the names featured in their 2008 Face-Off Yearbook All-Name Team. The story in the blog shares these (and oh-so-many more) after pointing out what many readers have learned from experience: the unique nature of the names bestowed upon the players.

In a comment response, a reader provides some names of female players, including: Cookie Smith and Bailey Andrews. BTW, the original tip for the story came from The Quad, the Times blog on College Sports and always a great source for those of us tracking certain players, teams, etc. .

In other news, Target is officially Number One, even beating Macy’s! Of course, they are #1 in The Princess’s heart (how could you even ask that?), the retailer is also #1 in Luxury Report 2008, topping a list of 12 department stores and mass-discount stores where wealthy consumers shop. This report is part of a new study from Unity Marketing, a niche market research group specializing in consumer habits and spending.

According to the study, almost 55% of wealthy shoppers said they bought merchandise at ‘Le Boutique’ in 2007. Following is some insight on Target’s marketing from Unity’s President, Pam Danziger, followed by the rest of the Top 12 list.

“There’s a viability today in cheap-chic that probably wasn’t there a couple of years ago — retailers like Target are really tapping into designer names,” Danziger said. “Target also attracts the interest of affluent consumers by offering viable products at lower costs.” In addition to offering selections from Liz Lange, Mossimo and Isaac Mizrahi (his contract is up at the end of 2008)…”

2. Macy’s
3. CostCo
4. Nordstrom
5. Wal-mart
6. Kohl’s
7. Sam’s Club
8. J.C. Penney
9. Bloomingdale’s
10. Neiman Marcus
11. Dillard’s
12. Sears

Now some of the data appear, at least to our addled little brains, to be counter-intuitive. Would not Needless Markup Neiman Marcus be much higher in the rankings? Where is Barneys? What about TP’s beloved Saks? Why is Saks not on the list, hunh? What about that, hhmmm?! Well, this is not addressed in the stories’ we’ve read, but it occurs to us that:

#1) The study included discount chains, like CostCo, Sam’s Wal-mart, etc. In fact, only one of the twelve retailers would be considered a true luxury brand: Neiman’s. Nordstrom is almost there, but only 99% or so at least according to industry standards we’ve seen applied previously.

#2) Not knowing the methodology it is tough to speculate (but clearly not all that tough) but methinks the sample used for the survey was not 100% “wealthy shoppers.”

That’s just our two cents on that topic. For now. Grins and giggles!
