Sunday Snippets: Vineyard Vines Opening, Suri’s Shoes, Rogan for Target Collection Debuts

Springtime… a sleepy Sunday… a feeble mind… it seems all have conspired to make coherent discourse impossible for The Princess today. Sigh. Therefore we are reduced to simply sharing some of those items capturing our attention recently that we thought might be of interest to you.

We’ll start with a snippet that belongs in the “Insane & Over-Indulgent Parent” file as well as the “Conspicuous Consumption” category. It seems that Suri Cruise, enchanting daughter of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, was fascinated to some degree with a pair of dashing red flats she noticed when visiting the Vivier store on Madison Avenue last week. Now we have word the company will make their first ever pair of children’s shoes ‘to the child’s liking’ according to Women’s Wear Daily.

The Vineyard Vines expansion continues, with their opening in Georgetown (DC) last week at the former Wet Seal store site on Wisconsin at M. The uber-preppy retailer also also opened their Westport store recently, right on Main Street, taking over what used to be the Talbots Mens shop. Ouch. (A painful example of what happens when one loses touch with their brand and their primary customer, let alone commences putting energy into efforts to attract new customers and grow brand extensions. Double ouch.)

Now it’s time for a few looks from the Rogan for Target Collection, debuting today, and we apologize in advance for our hideous photos. We do start with an image of the designer, Rogan Gregory, followed by pieces from the collection. The collection is described as “…an environmentally-conscious collection of modern silhouettes and nature-inspired prints and patterns“. The Princess must acknowledge she is underwhelmed, hopeful the pieces might look better when seen and touched in person at the Boutique (Target). In all fairness, we admit earthtones have never really been our ‘thing.’ A reminder that the pieces are all done in organic cotton, and still reasonably priced for those watching their fashion budgets.

It would appear simply everyone is interested in the collection, at least when it’s Hollywood and when it is the opening at Barney’s last week for its limited run before the full move to Target nationwide. Below we see Nicky Hilton with the designer. Do we think Ms. Hilton will be spotted wearing the organic collection?

Christie’s Auction Off, Fred Leighton Bankruptcy, Barneys and Target Together?

And you didn’t think there could be Breaking Preppy News, did you? Well, something akin to that last night with word that Christie’s‘Rare Jewels and Gemstones’ auction was off, canceled by a New York judge. News the $34 million auction was being canceled did not get to many dealers & collectors until after they arrived at the auction house for the sale. This was the sale Christie’s touted as having some of “the most important antique jewelry in history.” The jewels belong to Ralph Esmerian, owner of Fred Leighton, and he didn’t want them sold at what he called “fire sale prices.” The legal maneuvering had been going on all day, and reports say that at 4:20pm lawyers for Fred Leighton filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. A shocker for some, but not for others following the fight over the Fred Leighton name and assets. This was also the sale that was supposed to finance the new Fred Leighton store in Beverly Hills. Some of the pieces to have been sold last night include a $15 million pink diamond ring and a $6 million diamond brooch that was owned at one time by the wife of Napoleon III, both shown above. As of this writing (Weds., 7:30pm) it would appear the auction will not take place tonight, but your best bet is to stay in touch with Christie’s for the latest on an  unfortunate situation.

Time to move on to something much more appealing, don’t you agree? (Really, fights over the family jewels are bad enough, let alone those played out in court and in public. This is at the top of the list of things that just aren’t done. Period.) Next in the PrepBytes is the odd marriage between Target and Barney’s!

In another offbeat NewsByte (and it’s not even a full moon here at the Prepatorium) word is out that the Rogan for Target collection scheduled for this Spring will actually have its official launch at Barney’s. New York & Beverly Hills. Those Barney’s, yes. Of course, the surprise is not Rogan’s presence at Barney’s, as he is already well represented in those hallowed halls, but rather, the appearance of Le Boutique Target (for full impact, insert lush, rich pronunciation here, Tar-szhay). The new line, by uber-green designer Rogan Gregory will debut in May, and despite earlier word it would consist totally of swimsuits, evidently that’s not the case from looking at the print ads. It’s part of Target’s GO International Collection of Limited Edition clothing, and the store’s news release says it will “exude a beach safari vibe.” The 100% organic line will actually hit Barney’s New York on May 8th, and Barney’s Beverly Hills on the 15th. Target stores nationwide will have the goods for sale starting on May 18; they’ll be available through June 28th. If you are frothing at the mouth at this point and find you simply need all Rogan all the time, rejoice! His next New York store opens in May at Bowery & Bond. For those less familiar with Rogan’s work, he is quite the design-world darling, recipient of a CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Award, co-creator of Bono’s line, Edun, along with Bono’s wife, Ali Hewson. He also does the eponymous and oh-so-upscale denim line and co-founded the Loomstate line as well. BTW, some pieces from the most recent GO collection, Milla Jovovich-Hawk for Target® are available now online in the Clearance section. Of course if you are seeking other Milla items, one need only visit the website.
