Help Me Understand, Lilly Pulitzer Calling Cards & Address Labels

Hello-Hello everyone! How are we all doing now that we’re approaching midweek?

Today we really aren’t covering much of anything one might consider preppy. Not really. Not unless one considers our first topic borderline preppish, only because the subject is affiliated with a certain faux-prep school television show we continually natter on about.

Okay now.  Not to sound like a crankenstein (translation: stand by for complaints peaking the Crank-o-Meter in the red zone, honestly, what a whiner), but upon seeing photos of Gossip Girl star Leighton Meester in this… ah, wearing this… well, we are clearly lacking nouns by which one could refer to such a… umm, such a garment. How’s that?

Before seeing the photos most relevant to our decision that this episode be officially classified as a “Help Me Understand,” we want to share a few other images to make the point that we find the actress to be absolutely beautiful.  And we thought Ms. Leighton looked stunning.

And perhaps even from the side… kind of, sort of, maybe.

However, these first photos don’t actually reveal the depth and breadth lacking in said garment.

WARNING: The following photos are NSFW.

The Garment was worn to Sunday’s MTV Movie Awards; the photos prompted PTDD (Post Taumatic Dress Disorder) flashbacks, eerily reminiscent of the Blake Lively Romper Episode.

We recognize we’re not exactly the demo sought by the MTV pooh-bahs. Nor are we anything remotely resembling hip or slick or cool or stylish, but we didn’t think we had gone over to the dark side, you know, the dreaded old fuddy-duddy part of the planet.

Is it us, dolls? Our upbringing? Our age? We implore you: help us understand.

On a side note, we are ever-so-excited this morning because we finally learned what NSFW means! The Spousal Unit explained it once he collected himself after hearing TP trying to sort it out solo. A few guesses we actually thought were possibilities before crumbling and asking for assistance:

  • Not Safe for Women
  • No Situations for Work
  • No Sly Favors Wanted
  • National Sillies from Women (?)

Please don’t laugh until we’ve left the room, we already feel utterly uncool and clueless. Sigh.

In other fashion news, word today from Wal-Mart they will be carrying a new line just in time for back to school shopping. It will be created by…

teen superstar Miley Cyrus and Max Azria, perhaps best known for his BCBG line.  This news comes on the heels of yesterday’s announcement by the Disney Channel that Hannah Montana returns for Season 4 this fall.  In the photo above Ms. Cyrus is wearing pieces from the new collection.  From the Walmart snooze release news release:

“The line will arrive in all Walmart stores and on Walmart.com in early August, and includes tops, pants, graphic tees, shoes and accessories, all priced less than $20.”

A quick couple of Sales & Savings to pass along:

Garnet Hill is offering loads of markdowns in their Childrens’ department, and eLuxury is promoting an Extra 40% Off and complimentary shipping for orders totaling more than $100, but the eLuxury promotion ends tonight at midnight.

eLuxury.com

Brooks Brothers is pushing deeper discounts at their online only clearance; J. Crew is touting the addition of more merchandise to their sale section.

Additionally, Lands’ End is offering “Save 20% to 40% Off Dresses, Pants, Skirts, & Shorts,” while competitor LL Bean is promoting “Savings up to 60%” on their site.

In honor of today’s kickoff at the Lilly Pulitzer Warehouse Sale we’ll share one of this week’s best additions to the Princess Shoppe, the Lilly Labels and Calling Cards!

The calling cards are printed on thick card stock, very posh IOHO. There are so many fabulous designs it is impossible to select just one favorite!  We adore the navy blue and hot pink used in Cloud Nine, so much so we will dub it today’s Pretty in Pink.

But then, we’ve always been a little crazy for Loco Patch too. (Ahem, it would appear that Silly Princess somehow got out today.)

Lilly Pulitzer Loco Patch

And there are another twenty-plus divine designs on the site, there really aren’t any we don’t like. Decisions, decisions. Sigh.

Smiles dollfaces, we are way too far behind in our duties here at the Prepatarium, we must scramarama! Don’t forget to share your wisdom on The Garment issue, we have an expiring mind dying to know!

Tiffany Makes a Move, Sales & Savings of a Prepalicious Sort

Hello-Hello and Happy Friday dolls, yippee!

It is a simply splendid day here at the Prepatorium, so let’s dive right into things! (The sooner we finish the sooner you-know-who can scoot outside!)

We want to do a quick reminder about the Lilly Pulitzer sale at RueLaLa; things sell out so quickly at these sites it is best to mention it right off the top so anyone interested in adding to their walk-in can head in that direction.

RueLaLa is one of those ‘invite only’ online sale sites that have sprung up recently. If you aren’t yet a member, use the special Princess code to join: go to RueLaLa.com, at the prompt select “Invited by a Member” and then enter this as the email address to get in: VIP@ruelala.com.

Now, Lilly isn’t the only sale at RueLaLa, they are also doing CC Skye.

Both sales end Saturday night.

Next, word on some interesting moves by upscale retailers, Tiffany & Henri Bendel. Let’s start with the store-we-once-adored,Tiffany. (Surely you remember this dreary tedious episode and yes, of course we continue wallowing in our snit.)

News came late yesterday that Tiffany is buying bankruptcy-challenged Lambertson Truex (see the middle of this post if seeking more details) from Samsonite. This could make perfect sense for both companies, as this story on the WWD site explains:

“Lambertson and Truex will explore the development of a collection of leather accessories for Tiffany & Co.”

Remember our posts last summer about these outstanding totes? (NOTE: We have linked to them as a courtesy but they are no longer available.)

Courtesy Tiffany.com

It makes perfect sense to us; there may well be many more pieces in this color.

As far as Bendel goes, they are going to stop selling clothing and shrink the 5th Avenue flagship store as today’s WWD reports:

“The Fifth Avenue flagship will be reduced in size from three to two selling floors, offering accessories, handbags, jewelry, gifts, beauty and fragrance…”

“There’s lots of iconography, like our [brown and white] stripes…

TRANSLATION: Probably more of this sort of thing.

Now mind you, TP has long been fond of Bendel’s iconic brown and white stripes, along with the Bendel Girl. We just don’t care to see them on our teapot every day, be it by Villeroy and Boch at Bendel or from Target.  So our guess is the company will roll out more logofied merchandise moving forward.

We do want to alert everyone there is a sale on some goods at Bendel, including the Henri Bendel Mini Notebooks. (We confess to a soft spot for these, in previous years they have made a great gift.)

They are fun because of their names: Bliss List, Me, Me, Me, Thin, Rich, and Fabulous, and Worth Waiting For. Previously selling at $25, the notebooks are now $12.50.

Perhaps if we hold hands and sing Kumbaya our fears about raging attacks of Logophobia will prove to be unfounded. What do you think?

++++++++++++++++++++++++

Yesterday’s post talked about what we refer to as something of a ‘preppy trifecta':significant sales at Brooks Brothers, J. Crew and Polo Ralph Lauren.  We neglected to mention the obvious:

Brooks Brothers Friends and Family event begins Saturday, providing a 30% discount on merchandise, ending Monday, May 11. Use promo code FRIEND79 or FRIEND 81 to receive the discount, or go to BrooksBrothers.com/friends.  By the way, if in need of the code to receive an additional 20% of sale merchandise at J. Crew, use promo code EXTRA20 at checkout.

++++++++++++++++++++++++

In other Sales & Savings news, Target has reduced prices on the Alexander McQueen collection, prices many felt were too high from the outset.

Additionally the always awesome Third Coast Preppy is clearly back in the swing of things after bringing an exquisite new preppy into the world, her list of preppy savings and sales can only be referred to by one word – Prepalicious!

++++++++++++++++++++++++

We also have a few briefs on several stars of that kinda’-sorta’-preppy Gossip Girl, starting with news that actresses Blake Lively and Taylor Momsen both made People magazine’s 100 Most Beautiful People list.

PHOTOS: People Magazine, WENN

And another star of the hit TV show has landed another magazine cover; Leighton Meester can be seen fronting this month’s issue of Cosmopolitan.

++++++++++++++++++++++++

We close with a Pretty in Pink.

A Princess customer needed token gifts to use as favors at a shower; she ordered 40 of these when she learned the custom key fobs are only $5 each.

Apologies for the shameless self-promotion, we just thought the fobs were such a cute idea and more-than-practical.  (They’re far more vibrant than TP’s photo conveys, Francesco Scavullo we are not.)

On that note, we do hope everyone has a delightful weekend filled with fun and food for the spirit!

An Anti-Prep Does Scrapbooking. Also, Mad Men Clothing For Our Very Own?

G’day everyone, we hope it is going swimmingly wherever you may be.

We are very excited here in the Corner Condo at Princess InterGalactic HQ: we spoke with the Lilly Pulitzer Stationery folks yesterday and everything is on track for them to ship our order this coming Monday! That means we will have things in house by Thursday or Friday – we can start shipping to you by the end of next week!  Whoo-hoo!

Because of that good news and because the Princess Consort has been working amazing hours to get some of the Lilly on the site, we thought we’d share a few more items. We start with the Beverage Napkins with Fun Sayings:

Lilly Pulitzer at PreppyPrincess.com

The Lilly words of wisdom include “Only count the happy hours,” a philosophy we can live by, and at $5 for a package of 20 napkins, a price we can smile at!

Frenzied parents can appreciate the wisdom of having Lilly’s My Activity Book on hand for little ones:

Lilly Pulitzer Activity Book at PreppyPrincess.com

These have 65 pages of activity sheets, stickers, 8 non-toxic jumbo sharpened pencils and an elastic closure.  The books will be $18, and they look just perfect for keeping the Young Miss and Master of your household entertained.

A reminder these items and some of our other Lilly merchandise is up on the Princess website for pre-ordering.  With everything shipping Monday (Feb. 1st) we expect our first shipment here by the 4th or 5th. Pre-ordering means your order gets out the door first when the Lilly merchandise arrives here. Pre-orders are at the top of the list and will be turned around on the same day we receive the merchandise from Lilly.

On to our quasi-prep news headling, beginning with a story that was really quite a shock to the system: Word that the original Anti-Prep, Paris Hilton, is going into scrapbooking.

PHOTO: Ben Tsui/Splash News

Paris Hilton, the Creativity Collection™ is described as “a multi-faceted line of fashion crafting kits from some of the most popular craft segments including scrapbooking, jewelry making and fabric embellishment.”

This has left us speechless. Not to do your thinking for you, but allow us to do your thinking for you: we are presuming you probably prefer we not start affixing crystals and other sparkly embellishment to your preppy placemats, towels and other items.  Is this a good guess?

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++

From our “You Can’t Make this Stuff Up” files, news today that the PETA ad for Sunday’s Super Bowl has been rejected by NBC; it is considered too sexually explicit for air.  How could a spot from this activist group involve sex, you wonder? We did too. Apparently because the ad features woman having relations. With vegetables.  Seriously.

PETA has their version of the story:

“After we submitted our proposed Super Bowl ad, which features a comely crop of models demonstrating their fondness for fresh produce, NBC nixed the ad, saying it “depicts a level of sexuality exceeding our standards.” No joke, this is straight from NBC—so stop fondling your fruit salad right now and read the list of shots NBC requested we cut before they’d reconsider:”

The group then lists some of the banned shots, not seen above, because we’re not listing them. One of their examples? “…rubbing —– region with pumpkin….” and the rest are far more explicit. And insane. But that’s just us. So there you have it.

On a related note, we *are* curious what PETA will have to say about Inaugural gown designer Jason Wu, creator of the party frock Michelle Obama wore last week.  In statements made by the  designer last week he did say he is “…working on a significant fur collection.”

For any readers still interested in behind-the-scenes details about J. Crew working on designs for Sasha and Malia Obama, the Telegraph has another story on the topic.

“Although the team never communicated directly with Mrs. Obama over the wardrobe created for the inauguration celebrations, says Lyons, they wanted to wish them well. “We tucked little notes in the coat pockets saying, ‘Congratulations, we love you guys!’ “

The increasingly popular Mad Men continues to leave its mark on the fashion world.  Today we have news there may be a Mad Men clothing line in the works from the show’s costume designer, Janie Bryant. In an interview with Glamour, Ms. Bryant hedges a bit when asked specifically about future projects, and fashionistas have translated this response into meaning “possible/probable clothing line.”

Courtesy amc-tv/Everett Collection

One of the more interesting parts of the articles delves into sources of inspiration for Ms. Bryant when designing for “Betty Draper,” played by the incredible January Jones.

Betty Draper

The designer reveals in the story that her inspiration comes from Grace Kelly, as well as from her own grandmother.

Photo Courtesy amc-tv

Glamour.com writer Tracey Lomrantz is so fond of the show’s look, she named the Betty Draper character as one of her 9 Best Dressed TV Characters Of All Time.

Our thanks to Grazia and The Cut for the background on this.

A SOTT (Sign of the times) note to fans of Domino magazine that just crossed: the magazine is being shut down. WWD just sent an urgent with that sad news.

Now, in order to be sure we leave you with a smile, we end on an up note, the Big Fish Boys Sailboat Tee-shirt at one of our favorites, Best Dressed Child.

Best Dressed Child

If that doesn’t bring thoughts of spring to you, how about the Girls Lilly Preppy Palooza Polly shirt?

Until next time, smiles to everyone!

This is Scary, Saks Shipping Offer, More J. Crew Problems, Suri Cruise is ‘Best’

Hello-Hello from Snow Central!

The Princess is trapped, unable to make her flight to Denver, thanks to a foot of snow in The Great Midwest. Harrumph.

It may be considered good news or not-such-good news depending on one’s perspective, but the weather does allow us to do a fresh post.  We start with an event creating a knot in the stomach and an awful sense of foreboding: the jewelry sale at Saks Fifth Avenue.  We thank the Madison Avenue Spy for the tip on this one. The sale includes this Judith Ripka Pavé Diamond Enhancer:

Judith Ripka, Saks Fifth Avenue

Many may be stupefied at TP’s negative anxiety about a sale. At Saks. But many also know upscale department stores like Saks, Bergdorf’s, Neiman’s, etc., do not have jewelry sales. Not. On. Fine. Jewelry.

Not on David Yurman.

David Yurman at Saks

Or Ippolita.

Ippolita Ring at Saks

If a store is financially healthy it would never put an Ippolita 18k Gold Two-Diamond Ring on sale. Would. Not. Happen.

BTW, Saks is doing complimentary free shipping on all orders, as well as offering a gift box and their red ribbon at no charge. Seriously. Just use PROMO code SFAGIFT at checkout.  If you missed yesterday’s post ,it contains a goodly amount of sale and promo code information.

We are off to stir up a Prozac cocktail. A pitcher full.

Another Gossip Girl star has landed a Teen Vogue cover. Leighton Meester is showcased in the February 2009 issue.

We thought you might enjoy her comment on headbands:

“I don’t wear headbands, ever.”

Teen Vogue February 2009

In March co-star Blake Lively graced the magazine’s cover.

Teen Vogue Blake Lively

In January’s Vogue Ms. Lively is named to a list of the 10 Best-Dressed Women; while the print version of the magazine directs you to the Vogue.com website for more on this (and other stories), we cannot locate anything on the site about this story.

Back to Teen Vogue, the cover promotes “The Punky Preppy Mix.” Hhhmmmm. Just this fall the magazine listed the Top 22 Preppy Essentials, including items from many of the standard stores like Lacoste, J. Crew, and Smythson, as well as newer players: Tory Burch, American Eagle Outfitters, Tommy Hilfiger and others.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Speaking of J. Crew... (you know where this is going), we continue to receive email about technical issues and problems with J. Crew’s online store.

This story in Thursday’s Storefront Talkback confirms the continued problems:

“Having suffered outages during Cyber Monday, J.Crew again became unavailable—to at least some prospective customers—for an extended period on Wednesday (Dec. 17). “

The subhead on the article reads “‘Tis the Season to be Jolly, Unless You’re in Charge of J. Crew’s Web site.” Ouch.  The retailer is awarded a lump of coal:

“Over at J.Crew, though, no apologies were offered. For those who know the tortured history of J.Crew and its site launch this summer, perhaps avoiding an apology was wise. This time, the site advised visitors to “stay tuned” and added that “even the best sites aren’t perfect.”

True. But as far as uptime goes, it’s clear that some sites are less perfect than others.”

Double ouch.  While management may be frustrated, customers always have choices, as the fabulous Mrs. Newlywed makes clear in yesterday’s comment:

“…I tried to place an order today for a very much unneeded sweater. The site wouldn’t let me place the order.

So, because after I realized it wasn’t working I didn’t actually NEED the sweater I won’t buy it at all  That is $70.00 they won’t get.

The phone line wasn’t working either.

tisk tisk on J.Crew”

The experience shared by another favorite, Lisa at Very Busy Mom with 4, ended on a more positive note:

“After three calls, I finally got my Crewcuts stuff, and they ended up Fed-exing it. I think they are still having issues–their site is moving very slow! Still love my stuff though.”

Frankly, we remain more than a little stunned the problems are not yet rectified.  For those willing to risk it, this particular sale continues through tonight, offering an additional 20% off with complimentary shipping for orders totaling more than $150; the promo code is MERRY.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Best & Company

At Best and Company the discounts are also deeper, making the childrens’ designer duds irresistable.  The Girl’s Cashmere Hoodie is only $35.90, discounted from an original $158 selling price.

Best & Company

The striped sweater is also available in Pink & White; both colorways appear to be available in a broad size range. According to the JustJared site, Suri Cruise is wearing Best’s Scallop Placket coat in this picture with her mother, actress Katie Holmes.

If in need of a darling wool coat in winter white, Best still has this one in a few sizes, now 50% off its $398 price.

We leave you with the ever-so-snuggly Pink Cable Cardigan, on sale at J. McLaughlin.

J. McLaughlin

An absolutely divine store, J. McLaughlin is also in the midst of a wonderful sale.

Don’t forget to enter our final Giveaway of the year, by leaving a question for The Princess Consort.  Here is a portion of a comment from the Fashion Herald and part of TC’s answer:

“Dear Princess Consort Sir, how does one stop one’s husband from stealing the covers at night? Please help, it’s getting really cold!”

“My dear freezing Fashion Herald – I understand your concern about your husband and his proclivity for stealing the bed covers. In the long term this will cease to be a problem because of global warming. However, we have an immediate situation that demands our complete attention. I will assume your husband has a ______________”

We are off to frolic in the snow! Happy day to everyone!

Thakoon for Target & Gossip Girl Board Game (Seriously.)

Hello-Hello!

We must apologize. Here at the Palace we are woefully behind, and we do not mean simply behind the times from a fashion perspective.  No, we are unforgivably slow in getting several tidbits to readers.  Part of the slowdown is all the last-minute orders we are receiving at the Preppy Princess. (And don’t you miss the personalization deadlines for your favorite lines like Boatman Geller, Whitney English!)

Thus it is that we are about a week behind in sharing the rest of the Thakoon for Target photos with you,  others previously shown in this post, all from the collection launching on December 25th.

Courtesy Target

We are rather fond of the floral coat, even at our decrepit stage of life.

Courtesy Target

The next look is clearly too young for TP, but we know it will flatter all of our readers.  Sigh.

.

It all looks fun and flirty, rather what we would expect from the designer.  Thakoon Panichgul, one of Michelle Obama’s favorites, has steadfastly refused to divulge any information he may have on the future First Lady’s Inaugural gown.  We say “good for him!”  Discretion is always the better part of valor.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

We mentioned a Gossip Girl game in our headline and there truly is such a thing:

Courtesy Urban Outfitters

The official name of the game (so to speak) is “Gossip Girl Never Have I Ever Game,” and it is available at Urban Outfitters online.  It is *not* available in their brick and mortar stores.  As described on the website:

“Hey Upper East Siders, it’s time to play a little game. Answer “Never Have I” questions about style, dating, school, family and gossip to win allowance money and become the Queen Bee!”

UrbanOutfitters.com

Categories include School, Style, Dating, Family and Gossip. The cards have photos of the major characters played by Blake Lively, Leighton Meester, Chace Crawford & Ed Westwick.

UrbanOutfitters.com

The game is selling for $32 at Urban Outfitters; we did a little poking about and discovered it is also available at Walmart (at least online) for $10.  One can also purchase it at Amazon at $19.98 for a new version; it is referred to by a slightly different name, “Imagination Gossip Girl Board Game” and the company one is actually dealing with is a Florida liquidation firm.  TP thinks there is something odd about all of this. Perhaps plans for marketing the game didn’t go according to plan.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Most readers with travel plans that involve sending children separately by air probably already knew this, but we were surprised to learn most airlines are increasing their fees for this service.  (Did that sound odd to you, as though the children were being sent via a cargo carrier?) Northworst Northwest is now charging $100 one-way and United Scare Lines United’s fee is up to $150 from $100.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

A few Pretty in Pink indulgences if you don’t mind, commencing with the Backgammon Travel set from Organize.com:

Organize.com

Our love for that is surpassed only by…

Organize.com

… the TDF Pink and Green Tic Tac Toe set.

On that cheery note, ‘bye until next time!
