Sneak Peek at Target’s Next Jewelry Line & the Tale of a Tee Makes a Princess Weep

Hello-Hello!

Greetings from the soaked and sodden Prepatorium here in the Great Midwest!

We start with news we simply have to share because it is so fun: we are the lucky winner of a beautiful scarf given away by Coterie Blog! Coterie is a must-read for us, written with a delightful mix of elegance, wit and just the right amount of whimsy for a perfect blend, and we highly recommend it!

Here is a peek at the luscious scarf we won in Miss Coterie’s giveaway…

Thank You Miss Coterie!

Thank You Miss Coterie!

As much as we love reading the Coterie blog, we are equally fond, if not more so, of her Coterie Books blog. We’re fanatical readers here at Princess HQ, it’s almost a sickness, really. It has been said about TP: “She’s never met a book she didn’t like.” At any rate, erudite verbiage and brevity are also hallmarks of the Coterie Book blog posts, and the recommendations are stellar. One of this week’s suggestions?

Toddle on over for a little visit, you’ll enjoy yourself at either spot, promise!

Back in April we shared news about the next jewelry collaboration from the wise minds at Le Boutique Targèt, this one with Anna Sheffield, perhaps best known for her Bing-Bang jewelry collection, popularized by the collection she did with Urban Outfitters, Bee 23.

The Collection lands at your local Tarszay August 30, but here’s a sneak peek at some of the pieces, starting with the Bow Necklace as featured in this month’s Teen Vogue:

In keeping with our tedious coverage continuing looks at fashions sported by the cast of Gossip Girl on-air and off, we share a few photos from this weekend’s Teen Choice Awards, starting with Leighton Meester.

Also at the event, co-star Chace Crawford.

Gossip Guy Ed Westwick was in attendance as well.

Dolls, we are struggling with the appeal Mr. Westwick holds for so many; is the expression seen upon his face in the photo above supposed to make him endearing? Cute? Cuddly? Let’s give him another opportunity to show those qualities, shall we?

PHOTO: Getty Images

PHOTO: Getty Images

The best we can do is say this is brnging us back to the “weaselly” or “appearance of a well-fed ferret” comments of a previous post.  Are we just hopelessly out of touch? Do tell, as the sense of being an ignoramus is crushing. (Ahem.)

Oh, and the surfboards are evidently the prize given to winners. Guess that doesn’t quite fit in the carry-on.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++

We close with a SOTT (Sign Of The Times) about Brioni, the upscale and ever-so-stylish Italian fashion house. (Think about the exquisite black tie apparel sported by “Bond, James Bond,” among other things.) Word comes today via the Times that the firm is acceding to These Challenging Economic Times. They will be marketing a tee-shirt.

A tee-shirt.

The story better explains why this is a shocker:

“…it will be the first offering of its kind for Brioni, whose image — and bottom line — have been built on formal wear and dressing rich Town & Country-style men since its founding in 1945.”

And while the Consort’s evening wear is not from this company, we have long loved the firm, in large part because of its rigid adherence to custom and quality, the refusal on their part to move manufacturing to less expensive locations, like Mexico.  More from the Times story:

“… it’s a telling sign of how both the financial crisis and changing consumer habits are forcing even the most conservative, family-owned luxury goods makers to adapt to a new world.”

Here is a look at the item under discussion:

PHOTO: Justin Maxon/The New York Times

PHOTO: Justin Maxon/The New York Times

It is difficult to discern from the photo, but the images on the shirt are vintage Brioni labels from 1950′s and 60′s vintage apparel.  We love the way the company’s CEO discusses the shirt:

“It should feel different from Hanes,” sniffed Mr. Perrone, a soft-spoken, aristocratic heir who became Brioni’s first sole chief executive last month…”

For more on “A Suitmaker to Princes Adapts to the Financial Crisis” from writer Nelson D. Schwartz, it is an outstanding read.  Sniff.

Brooks Brothers Black Fleece Announcement, Tory Burch Sunglasses

Hello-Hello and Happy Monday!

We must say that having the U.S. Open on the TV here at Princess InterGalactic HQ certainly makes for an enjoyable work atmosphere.

We begin by saying that once again TP is forced to publicly acknowledge her inability to properly assess the intricacies what qualifies for ‘cool’ in the world of fashion. To whit, today’s news that Brooks Brothers is opening not just one, but two more standalone Black Fleece stores.

Yes, it’s that Black Fleece with all designs by Thom Browne, he of the shorter pant lengths, a style we are constitutionally incapable of wrapping our little pea-brain around.

Above left, the Black Fleece Madras Cotton Blazer (now at a far more fiscally-friendly $515 as opposed to the original $850 price), and on the right, the Two-Button Classic Oxford Jacket (selling at $600, originally priced at $1000).

Our lack of ‘hip-itude’ is demonstrated by our surprise at the news. The new stores will be located in San Francisco (in the old Simon Pearce spot on Fillmore) and in Tokyo.  WWD reports (Women’s Wear Daily, subscription req’d.) the west coast store will be open by September.

Clearly we do not have our finger on the pulse.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++

In news of a gossipy sort (gasp), another Gossip Girl cast member has landed the cover of a popular magazine. This time it is one of the Gossip Guys, actor Chace Crawford, on the cover of People; he has been named the magazine’s “Hottest Bachelor.”

PHOTO: Courtesy People.com

While TP has yet to view an episode of the hit program, we do try and pay attention to the fashions from the show and other information.  We didn’t realize that co-star Penn Badgley originally wanted to have the Nate Archibald role Mr. Crawford has made famous.

PHOTO: Lance Staedler/People Magazine

Nor did we realize Mr. Crawford shares an apartment with Ed Westwick, another co-star.  For a People magazine video with Mr. Crawford as well as more photos, click here.

PHOTO: Albert Ferreira/Startraks

Now for our Question of the Day: is it just us, or does Mr. Westwick bear an unfortunate resemblance to a ferret?  Perhaps it is his hair?  He doesn’t look nearly as … ah, nearly as…. ummm… we’ll just say ‘intense’ in this photo from Thursday’s K-2 event at Bloomingdale’s. In fact, he looks rather charming.

PHOTO: Will Ragozzino/Getty

Also in the news, Gossip Girl actress Blake Lively, seen below with hairstylist Jennifer Johnson at the NYWIFT Annual Awards. We are confused by the trench coat over the party frock, unless it was a sponsored wearing of said trench, a strong possibility as it is also what Ms. Lively wore inside.

PHOTO: Neilson Barnard/Getty

We’re presuming everyone will sleep better this evening being up to speed on these latest events surrounding the hit show. (Heh-heh-heh.)

+++++++++++++++++++++++++

Despite the soft economy, Bloomingdale’s is opening the only Turnbull and Asser store-within-a store.  Previously one could only purchase Turnbull & Asser merchandise at the company’s own stores.

Photo: Elissa Wiehn via Men’s Style

This comes on the heels of the retailer’s unveiling the massive (7,000 square feet) Polo Ralph Lauren shop-within-the-store.

PHOTO: John Aquino/WWD

The newly refurbished Polo area stocks both Blue and Black Label goods, and actually has its own door on the 59th St. side of the flagship.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++

Also today, news  that Tory Burch is adding sunglasses to her line; they will be available sometime in November.

HOTO: WWD Staff

The oh-so-chic shades will run $135 to $195.

PHOTO:WWD Staff

The frames are being made by the same company that makes Ralph Lauren and Tiffany frames, so we expect they will be quality items.  Best of all, it appears they may not activate our Logophobia as we’re not seeing any of those telltale signs in these photos!

+++++++++++++++++++++++++

We close with a reminder to pop over and visit Whale Flip Flops for your chance to win a Carrie & Tuck portable writing center….

Carrie & Tuck at PreppyPrincess.com

The winner will select the color of their choice, Pink, Navy, Green, or Chocolate Brown portfolio. And we are also including a Preppy Alligator Refill Set to keep someone well-stocked in cute paper for the summer.

With that, we say adios until next time!

Preppish Tidbits, Sneak Peak at Coach Poppy Line

Hello-Hello, Happy Friday!

It is simply fantabulous here at the Prepatorium, although we expect a repeat performance of last night’s raging thunderstorms, they are expected to return this evening.  The booming and crashing always sends Scooter-the-Wonder-Cat straight up in the air and then under the bed, poor thing. It reminds us of when we were a tiny Princess and asked what was going on; at some point we were told the noise was God bowling.  Were you ever told any tall weather tales as a child?

So much happening in the few days we were away! First, a few SOTTs (Signs Of The Times), most of which many readers already know:

  • Eddie Bauer filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection Wednesday; yesterday a judge gave permission for the company to continue paying employees and vendors.
  • Upscale retailer Ben Sherman announced in May it will no longer carry shoes, last week the announcement came the childrens line will also be discontinued. Below, we’ll use the Sherman women’s Argyle Vest for today’s Adventures in Argyle. (It is quite the bargain, now only $39.99, originally $80.)

++++++++++++++++++++

Other newsy tidbits:

  • The city selected for Tommy Hilfiger’s second ‘American Stories’ ad campaign is our nation’s capital; below, one of the ads.
PHOTO: Phil Poynter via WWD
  • Ralph Lauren’s annual gala celebrating Wimbledon’s start attracted royalty, entertainers, and the fashion crowd last night at Kensington Roof Gardens.  We see Sarah Ferguson with daughters Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice in this photo.
PHOTO: Gareth Cattermole/Getty
  • There is a new preppy brand on our radar: Jeremy Argyle, recently opened in Soho, but better yet, available online! The company’s Pink Framed Stripe shirt is seen below:
  • ++++++++++++++++++++

One Sales & Savings reminder we feel obligated to share in light of the ‘additional percentage off’ savings:

The Kate Spade online sample sale ends tonight, but if one scoots over there before midnight, there is an additional 20% off merchandise.

++++++++++++++++++++

We share a few nautically-inclined items today, starting with the Vans Captain Fin anchor tee.  The design is actually the logo for Captain Fin, known for their surfwear.

Vans

And a line we weren’t familiar with that actually sounds rather unusual, the scented tees by Spiff.

Courtesy Spiff via Nitrolicious

Probably not for TP, but that doesn’t mean others can’t enjoy them. Our thanks to the always on-trend Nitrolicious, where we spotted the photo.

++++++++++++++++++++

Some may recall our previous post on the new Coach Poppy line aimed at a younger, more financially conservative demographic.  The Poppy bags aren’t officially due in stores until June 26th, but we can share a couple of the bags.

Courtesy Coach

Courtesy Coach

The line will include everything from bags and shoes….

to jewelry…

and headbands.

According to a wonderful story in Business Week about the company, price points for the line will run approximately 20% less than other Coach merchandise.

“Poppy is supposed to help move the entire company back to … a more comfortable place, which at Coach means an average price of $290 for a handbag.”

The story by Susan Berfield makes for a great read.

There is also a Coach Facebook page for the new collection.

We’ll leave you with a Pretty in Pink borrowed from the new group.

Chuck Bass & Don Draper – Need we Say More?

Hello-Hello, and happy day everyone!

We start with a nudge on a must-read story in the Times for fans of the styles seen in Mad Men and/or Gossip GirlFriday’s story looks at the costume designs for popular television shows, including interviews with Gossip Girl’s costume designer Eric Daman and Katherine Jane Bryant of Mad Men.

PHOTO: Giovanni Rufino/CW

Mr. Daman’s thought on sartorial selections for Ed Westwick’s character, Chuck Bass?

““He’ll walk around the Hamptons in a beautiful mint-green suit and a bow tie if he feels like it.””

Is there a better representation of Betty & Don Draper doing formal apparel?

We highly recommend the story and accompanying interactive photo piece. Below, some of the Mad Men cast backstage at the Golden Globes earlier this year.

PHOTO: Gavin Bond via INStyle.com

Mad Men aficionados may be intrigued by this story sharing the compromise reached in the ongoing hoo-haa over adding two minutes of commercial time to the hit show when it returns this August. (The 16th of August to be precise, but really, who’s counting?) A wise decision it seems, the two minutes are added but the content is not curtailed; the show will run into the 11pm hour a tad.

And in a final Mad Men note, the show’s style is invoked in this brief review of the new Liz Claiborne Men’s Line.

“The debut collection combines the slim cuts of the Mad Men era with classic preppy pieces–narrow polos and cardigans, bermuda shorts in madras, and two-button jackets.”

This is the first menswear line created under Isaac Mizrahi; it is created by a designer of whom we are fond, the gifted John Bartlett.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++

We also have a few SOTTs (Signs of the Times) to share:

  • Lots of speculation that Eddie Bauer may be filing for bankruptcy as early as this week; for more info, head for the story in USA Today. This one frustrates us no end, as this was once a great American company; now reduced to a B-school case study in what happens when a brand loses its way.
  • Neiman Marcus will cut the hours it is open in some locations to trim expenses; the story in yesterday’s WWD explains that the changes in hours will vary by location. For example, the underperforming Galleria store in Houston will now open at 1pm on Sundays (instead of noon), while another location will close at 8pm Monday-Friday, instead of the more standard 9pm. Hours at premiere sites like Northpark in Dallas and the Beverly Hills store will remain the same. And as we’re speaking of Neimans, don’t forget their sale continues. The new promo code for complimentary shipping with any purchase amount is JUNNM.

promo1

In other Sales & Savings news, Lord & Taylor’s Friends and Family sale offers an “Extra 25% Off Almost Everything,” with “10% off Cosmetics and Fragrances.” Use the promo code FRIENDS at checkout.

nyt-eblast_01

Online Shoes is doing their Summer Sale:

060209_summer_sale_lp_v1_1

And J. Crew has decided to throw in Complimentary Shipping with their Extra 20% off promotion.

Yes, they call it Free Shipping, but TP refuses to use that term; it isn’t really ‘free’ by our definition.  It is complimentary, or included, or no charge, but not free. (Ooooh, do we have a reappearance of Crankenstein Princess?!) The promo code remains the same, EXTRA20.

And to continue our tedious whine-athon, we’re curious to know if anyone else finds it almost laughable/borderline offensive when a retailer puts an item “on sale” by taking approximately 13% off the original selling price? The issue came to mind with the Crew Perfect-Fit Short-Sleeve tee:

J Crew

We don’t mean to unfairly pillory J. Crew, and we adore the tee, there are more than we care to think about a few here at the Palace.  Nor is J. Crew the only company pursuing what seems an insane practice, but 13% barely covers the sales tax in some locales these days. Can someone help us understand?

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Okay enough of our insanity, it’s time to perk up with a few Pretty in Pink items, our first from Polo Ralph Lauren, also holding a sizable Sale and Clearance event.

The Fairway Print stretch polo is now $69. While not for us, the shorts hold potential. (This could be attributed to our Logophobia, but it seems a high proportion of the womens items we surfed had the logos-on-steroids issue.)

The second is a discovery by our good friends over at the Pink and Green Scene:

The Company Store

The letters are just too cute, available at The Company Store.

Happy hunting, if that is your task today! Until next time, g’bye.

The Princess Gets Back to Basics

Happy-Happy almost-weekend everybody! Here at the Prepatorium we finally have something resembling normal temperatures: we might hit 75 degrees today. Calm yourselves, it has not yet happened, it is merely a prediction made by the Weatherologists on teewee, so there’s just an itty-bitty chance they could be wrong.

Regular readers are aware we feel strongly about the virtues of basics upon which one can construct a meaningful existence: basic decency towards others, basic recipes, basic apparel and accessories.

One such elementary item is a simple watch on a classic ribbon band.  Today we bring you a new entrant to this sector of the market:

Bobby Jones

Bobby Jones

The new watch from Bobby Jones is just out. It has a stainless steel case and comes in two additional striped ribbon patterns, as well as a solid black ribbon for those preferring a more understated look. (TP’s father wore a plain Timex with a plain black ribbon strap as far back as she can remember.)

51000SE50_sm51000SE48_sm

The movement is by Seiko, so this one isn’t just a pretty face. It is available now at the Bobby Jones Shop.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++

We have several other opportunities for you to make contributions to the economy, all of them fiscally-friendly, of course.  Bergdorf Goodman is having their Designer Sale with “Prices as much as 40% Off” on items like the D & G Pumps(L) and the Tory Burch Megan flat (R).

BGX0AH0_mtBGX09SW_mh

Another emporium offering substantial savings: J. Press. Their Blue Silk Herringbone jacket is an excellent investment for the MOTH (Man of the House) in your life.

J. Press

J. Press

Classic stalwart Banana Republic also has scads of goods with revised price points. Below, the Cotton V-Neck Sweater, now $39.99 for most colors, but only $24.99 in white.

Not to be left out, Brooks Brothers is promoting some solid discounts on Men’s merchandise for Father’s Day.

Our next company covered is assuredly not known for helping one save their pocket change; we quite respect that policy. We’re talking about Hermès.

Hermes

Hermes

The luxury firm has opened a seasonal store in East Hampton. The shop is located right on Main, will be open until Sept. 20, and will carry some limited edition goods.

In another SOTT (Sign of The Times), word from P&G that Max Factor cosmetics will no longer be sold in the US.

PHOTO WWD Staff

PHOTO: WWD Staff

Today’s story in WWD about the planned phase-out quotes an unnamed P&G executive:

“It’s a shadow of what it once was. Domestically it’s just so competitive. They have lost considerable real estate over the years and certainly over the last two years. It’s actually long overdue.”

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Because we adore The Queen (we more-than-adore our own TQM but today we speak of the one on the far side of the pond,), we thought we would close out the post with this photo, perfectly suited to be today’s Pretty in Pink.

The picture of HRH and Prince Philip dates to late May, and we think she looks faboo.

Enjoy the weekend, dollfaces, we’ll chat again soon!

Tiffany & Cartier for Sale at…Bluefly?!

Hello-Hello!

Because we have an all-afternoon volunteer commitment, today shall be more photos and fabulosity!

We begin by fulfilling a promise we made yesterday: more pictures from Saturday’s Veuve Clicquot Manhattan Polo Classic. On the left, Emily Mortimer; Alek Wek is on the right in the cheery yellow Zac Posen dress.

Kelly Klein wore Dolce & Gabbana; Chloe Sevigny was in Chloé.

It’s possible readers are more interested in pictures of these two gentlemen, but we think not. We’re quite sure you are operating on a higher plane, coming from a much more cerebral place…yes?

PHOTO: Steve Eichner/WWD

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++

We move on to a rather amazing SOTT (Sign Of The Times): news that discount online shop Bluefly will be selling Tiffany, Van Cleef & Arpels, Bulgari, and Cartier jewels. (Gasp! Oh, the horror!) However, it is not as if Bluefly shall be carrying new jewelry pieces on the site, nor shall they be regularly offering such upscale goodies as a matter of course. This story in today’s WWD (Women’s Wear Daily, subscription req’d.) explains:

“Bluefly has so far eschewed the private-sale format, but on June 8 will hold its first invitation-only, limited-time sale.”

“Prices are about 20 percent less than new. For example, an estate Cartier Love Bracelet will cost $3,080 rather than $3,850 at regular retail.”

We must confess our appreciation of the Love Bracelet; the Queen Mother still wears hers, acquired way back…well, just way back when.

PHOTO: Courtesy of Cartier via WWD

PHOTO: Courtesy of Cartier via WWD

As noted, these are estate pieces, not brand new items coming directly from the jewelry stores themselves.

The sale is a joint effort with upscale estate jewelry wholesale firm Circa. (Come now, we’ve all noticed their ads in the Times discreetly offering ‘assistance’ in generating a little pocket change by liquidating those silly trinkets collecting dust at the estate. Oh, pshaw, admit it, you know you’ve secretly pondered the possibilities created by letting another generation ummm… experience the beauty of  Great-Grandmama’s pearls. And that monstrosity of a ring left from the wedding-that-wasn’t when that new-money-and-no-taste-man was chasing after Aunt Evangeline, you know the one with the 2.8 carat ruby absolutely laden with those garish diamonds?! Beyond Nouveau Gauche, it was an abomination – why not dispose of it? Good. At least we understand each other.)

And who might one see in the next sale of this kind at Bluefly?

“The next sale might feature the moderns David Yurman, Judith Ripka and John Hardy…”

(Pssst… again, that’s Circa.com and their number is 877.876.5493. Not that you would ever consider calling them. Indeed.)

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++

A few quick sales to share before we scoot:

lilly-11

That’s right, the Lilly Pulitzer Warehouse Sale starts tomorrow!

Also, Polo Ralph Lauren is taking deeper discounts in their sale and clearance event.

polo_sale_img1_0602_cms

We leave you with a darling shot of Daisy Duke’s darling godson, Baby Zeke, in his snappyseersucker sailor suit. Miss Daisy is clearly looking after his sartorial needs. (Heh-heh-heh.)

* (CEO) There is a price consciousness dictating shoppers’ purchases today unlike anything I have seen before. We’ve spent years building our brands to compete on quality, aspiration, and a unique store experience, not on price.
* There are also fashion headwinds. We are currently in a cycle that lacks a dominant trend in the female business. Trends that appear to have some traction are not the long-term trend of classic, casual, preppy all-American sportswear that is core to our heritage.
* As an update to our specific plans for new store openings in 2009, domestically in addition to the Hollister flagship in SoHo, we now expect to open 10 stores in 2009. This figure includes 2 abercrombie kids’ stores, 4 Hollister stores, 2 Gilly Hicks stores, and 2 outlet stores.

The Preppish Bargains Continue

Hello everyone, may your day be going better than TP’s! (We’re merely having a Monday on a Wednesday, so to speak.)

We want to alert you to a number of Sales and Savings opportunities currently available, starting with the Hayden-Harnett sale. Significant markdowns have been taken on many items in all categories, including their Toulouse Weekender now at $244; the original price was $348.

Brooks Brothers is promoting their continued Clearance, with prices reductions of 50% to 70% according to their mailer.

BrooksBrothers.com

We are somewhat tempted by the Wool Chalkstripe Coat, very handy for a winter here in The Great Midwest.  The coat’s original selling price was $798, it is now $239.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Saks has started their Sale, with a good assortment available across most categories and lines, including many preppish brands. The Tory Burch Mercedes Coat is now $417, discounted from $695.

And from the Lilly Pulitzer Jubilee Collection, Saks offers the Cotton Sateen Fitch Shift.

This one is so luscious we’ll make it today’s Pretty in Pink. The dress retailed at $348; it is now selling at $209.  Not *quite* meriting PIP status but fun nonetheless: Lacoste’s Bold Stripe Cotton Sweater with 3/4 sleeves.

Lacoste continues to carry a significant amount of merchandise that is on sale or discounted in some way at their online store.

Now for an entirely different looking Lacoste tee, how about this avant-garde version?

Via Men.Style.com

Via Men.Style.com

A collaboration between Lacoste and the design minds at Andrea Crews, the shirt will be available in July. We simply had to share the tee because of that delightful touch of whimsy in the design, almost mocking the brand’s heritage. (For those wondering if it might trigger a case of Logophobia, goodness, no, no, no, not at all. That can’t happen when the design clearly isn’t intended to be taken seriously.)

With that happy tee as our last image, we say G’bye until next time!
